Various ways to promote your site- What works,
and what doesn't (Article)
By Jim Daniels
From the article:
Do you own a small or home-based business? If so, the Internet is the
place to be! After all, I'm sure you've picked up a magazine recently
and seen ads like this... "Get your business in front of millions
of customers!
Advertise online and sell your products to the world!"
Hey, I'll be the first to tell you, it's true. You CAN get your business
in front of millions of customers. You CAN sell to the world and make
a great living. But, and this is a BIG BUT, you have to do it right.

About.com
About is a massive, human-edited directory - with no "Add URL"
button. Having a link from here to your site is important though. It
scores big points in Google's PageRank. To get your site listed, go
to the area where you feel your site belongs, e-mail the editor and
ask nicely for your site to be reviewed. It's definitely worth a try.

Xpress Press (Recommended)
Is your product or service newsworthy?
If so, consider these guys. Xpress Press will distribute your full press
release to journalists who signed up to receive information from them.
They currently have about 10 000 journalists in their database.

- including some stats & predictions. No date of publication is
given, but it seems recent.
